Turnitin rolled out an AI-writing indicator that scans submissions and reports an estimated percentage of text it believes was AI-generated. It's separate from the classic plagiarism/similarity score — plagiarism checks for copied text, while the AI indicator looks at writing patterns that resemble machine output. So when your school "runs it through Turnitin," they may see both a similarity score and an AI score.
How it decides something is "AI"
Turnitin's AI detector, like others, doesn't know who wrote a document. It analyzes statistical patterns — chiefly how predictable the word choices are and how uniform the sentences are. How reliable is it, really?
This is the part that gets overstated in both directions. The truth:
- It catches obvious cases. A long essay pasted straight from ChatGPT with no edits has a real chance of being flagged.

What an AI score actually means for you
A Turnitin AI percentage is an estimate based on patterns — not a measurement of how you wrote something. "60% AI" doesn't mean "60% of this was definitely written by AI." It means the text's patterns resembled what the model associates with AI. That's why a flag should trigger a conversation, not an automatic penalty — and why, if you wrote it yourself, you have grounds to push back.
Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT if you reword or paraphrase it?
This is the most common follow-up question, and the honest answer is: sometimes. Lightly reworded ChatGPT — swapping a few synonyms, flipping clause order — often keeps the same smooth, predictable pattern the detector reacts to, so it can still get flagged. Heavier rewriting that genuinely changes the rhythm and sentence structure is much harder to catch, because at that point the statistical fingerprint of the original model output is mostly gone. The catch: naive "spinning" with a thesaurus tends to make text read worse to a human while barely moving the AI score. Turnitin's AI indicator isn't tuned to one specific model — it looks for machine-like patterns in general, so text from Gemini, Claude, Copilot or any large language model can trigger it the same way ChatGPT does. It's not checking "was this ChatGPT?"; it's estimating "does this read like AI wrote it?" What do the Turnitin AI percentages actually mean?
The number is an estimate of how much of the document matched AI-like patterns — not a confidence score that you cheated. Roughly:
- 0% — nothing tripped the detector. Common for genuinely varied human writing, and for well-humanized text.
- 1–20% — a few passages looked machine-like. This is the noisy zone where false positives live; a couple of tidy, formal paragraphs can land here even in completely honest work.
- High (60–100%) — large stretches matched AI patterns. Real for unedited ChatGPT, but also where confident false positives hit clean, formal, or non-native writers.
There's no official "acceptable" threshold — schools set their own, and many treat any AI flag as a prompt to talk to the student rather than an automatic penalty.
Can you see your Turnitin AI score before you submit?
Usually not. The AI indicator is shown to instructors, not students, and it typically isn't part of the self-check similarity reports some schools let you run.
